Frequently Asked Questions

Bear Hunt with Hounds Rifle Black Bear Color Phased

What is the success rate of Bear hunting with Pinnacle Outfitters?

When it comes to bear hunting with hounds, Pinnacle Outfitters has set the standard in the West.

We have maintained a 100% success rate for sixteen consecutive seasons — a level of consistency that is virtually unheard of in the industry.

And these aren’t just any bears.

The majority of our harvested bears are color-phase bears, with several exceeding 500 pounds. Our program is built on relentless preparation. Our hounds are conditioned and trained 11 months out of the year, and collectively tree over 150 bears annually. That level of experience translates directly into opportunity when it matters most — on your hunt.

For hunters looking to maximize their time in the field, this hunt can also be combined with an elk or mountain lion hunt.

What does a typical Lion hunt look like?

Our mountain lion hunts begin in the early morning hours, well before sunrise. Multiple 4x4 trucks cover designated road systems, carefully checking for fresh tracks. With several experienced teams working simultaneously, we are highly efficient at locating a viable track.

Once a track is confirmed and conditions are right, our hounds are released shortly after sunrise.

From that moment on, the adrenaline takes over.

Few hunting experiences compare to the sound and intensity of a seasoned pack of lion hounds trailing a cat through rugged country. Our hounds are meticulously trained and conditioned, and we stay with them as they work the track until the lion is treed or held at bay.

When we arrive at the tree, you’ll come face to face with one of North America’s most elusive predators — and have the opportunity to harvest an exceptional mountain lion under the guidance of an experienced professional team.

How do you purchase your license?

All hunters are required to purchase their license through the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish prior to arrival.

You will need:

  • Game Hunting License
  • Lion or Bear License (depending on your hunt)
  • Habitat Stamp
  • Habitat Management & Access Validation

When completing your purchase, be sure to select the E-Tag option during checkout.

If you do not already have an account, you will need to create one through the New Mexico Game & Fish customer portal.

To ensure everything is completed properly, we are happy to walk you through the process step-by-step. We want you fully prepared and focused on your hunt — not paperwork.

Client Testimonials

Stan K. 2017 Hunt

When I first realized I was actually going to have an opportunity to hunt a black bear, I was beyond excited!  Thanks to our good friend John, we were able to make it happen!

Even though at the start of the hunt, I really did not know what to expect but it turned out to be one of the most memorable times of my life!  I was so impressed with Alan and his crew with the entire hunt, everything from the delicious meals at the campsite to learning how dogs are used to help with the tracking, what an adrenaline rush!  Great team effort to finally get my trophy bear!  They took incredible care of us and went out of their way to make our time very memorable!  Thank you Pinnacle Outfitters!!
